Italian volunteers help to build mission station

The diocese of Gizo is still busy with the rebuilding of facilities that were damaged or destroyed by the tsunami that occurred on 2 April 2007. There are also other projects in seven parishes.

A group of Italian volunteers helped the diocesan workers in three of the projects in Gizo and Nila in the Shortland Islands, Western Province and in Waghina, Choiseul Province. In Gizo they were engaged in five main projects: rebuilding of ten houses, rebuilding of a shop at St Peter’s Training Center, completion (electrical and plumbing) of the Chinatown market house for rental for diocesan income, completion of the priests’ house and church at Nusabaruka, and adapting the newly purchased “Betania House of Prayer” at the Hill top in Gizo. At Nila Parish the diocesan workers were busy finishing the mini hospital that was started in 2014 with electrical and plumbing installations on the way. General maintenance of four schools is also ongoing as it is the completion of a new church with a 400 sitting capacity at Waghina parish.

There were two containers with materials received from Italy, and now unloading the third just brought in from Honiara. It contains the batteries and solar panels for the solar system at Nila mini hospital and the materials for plumbing. Various furniture and some equipment for the mini hospital too will be unloaded and brought to Nila by ship and roofing materials for Waghina Church. Other projects: mission station house in Taro; kinder garden at Christ the King Parish, Voru Voru, Choiseul Province; priest’s house, staff houses and dormitory at Nila, Shortland Islands; library at Moli; the priest’s house at Noro and one staff house. The communities are looking forward for a new face lift in this year 2015.
